Gender Inclusivity & Importance of Pronouns
The use of pronouns and gender references are embedded in everyday conversations and interactions. Aside from our given names, there is nothing more personal than the way people refer to us through the use of pronouns. Our pronouns are how we identify ourselves. Properly pronouncing an individual’s name and using their desired personal pronouns are way a way of showing respect, especially in the workplace. According to Out & Equal Workplace Advocates (2020), using an individual’s correct pronouns is a way of validating one’s identity, encouraging authenticity, and assisting in building truly inclusive and supportive cultures1.
As a leader in diversity and equity, WBEC-East will continue to promote an inclusive and positive environment for all. To be inclusive means we treat all individuals fairly and respectfully, as well as ensuring all of our constituents can contribute to the success of our organization. Recognizing the importance of gender identity ensures our clients can show up authentically. Creating a gender inclusive environment is critical in helping us in achieving our mission of helping all women achieve economic self-sufficiency.
We welcome everyone to share the pronouns they would like us to use when referring to them!
